Road America Recap: McDowell and Alfredo Suffer Bad Luck in Wisconsin

A Recap of the Weekend Past

It was a great July 4 weekend for the NASCAR Cup Series as they began a new tradition celebrating Independence Day in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin racing at Road America. Huge crowds poured around the road course to cheer the return of the NASCAR Cup Series to the track.

Front Row Motorsports (FRM) didn't get the results they hoped for in front of the large crowd.

Michael McDowell and his No. 34 Love's Travel Stops Ford Mustang team finished 30th.

Anthony Alfredo and the No. 38 Ford Mustang team finished 37th.

MICHAEL MCDOWELL. NO. 34 LOVE'S TRAVEL STOPS FORD MUSTANG. FINISHED 30 Michael McDowell and the No. 34 Love's Travel Stops team were fast on Sunday, but a pit road penalty and some damage to the nose ultimately led to a 30th-place finish.

McDowell started 18th and had moved into 13th by Lap 5. He raced up to 12th before the team wanted to pit before the end of Stage 1. NASCAR Officials said that McDowell drove through too many pit stalls and the team was penalized. He was thus 30th at the end of Stage 1.

In Stage 2, McDowell raced back through the field. The Love's Travel Stops team again came to pit road just before the end of Stage 2. McDowell finished the stage in 24th.

The team then restarted inside the top-10 to begin the run to the end. On the restart, McDowell suffered nose damage from contact. The damage hurt the grip of the car as McDowell raced hard to stay up front. He later fell back and the team gambled on a late-race pit stop for new tires. The team finished 30th.

"We didn't come here to run 30th or think about that. I had a penalty on pit road and we lost track position. Then late, we just battled some other issues. I'm proud of the Love's Travel Stops team for fighting, but things didn't go our way. We'll now head to Atlanta with Fr8 Auctions back with us."

Anthony Alfredo and the No. 38 Ford team finished 37th on Sunday. Aldredo started the race from the 24th position and remained in that position through Stage 1. The team came down pit road for a planned pit stop before the end of Stage 1. Alfredo was 35th at the end of the stage.

But, Alfredo restarted sixth and raced with the leaders in Stage 2. The team then made another planned pit stop before the end of the stage. The team finished 31st in Stage 2 and then jumped to 15th to make his run to the end.

But, a brake rotor failure ended the team's day in the final stage. The rotor broke and Alfredo was sent into a sand trap to stop the car. The accident led a to a 37th-place finish.

"We blew out a brake rotor and it was a ride into the sand trap. Luckily that was there to slow the car down. Before that, we were having a pretty good day. We were inside the top-25 and had a chance at a good finish. We just had the failure before we could get to the end. I want to thank for helping us this weekend. I learned a lot and can't wait to come back to Road America.
