Smith Finishes Third on Iowa Dirt
Gilliland Moonlights to Victory with his Dad While McDowell Enjoys First and Final Weekend Off
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (June 20, 2022) – Zane Smith had a career day Saturday on the dirt at the famed Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway. The three-time winner this season piloted the Boot Barn Ford F-150 to third Saturday night- his best finish in a dirt race.
The race was won by Todd Gilliland racing for his father's team, David Gilliland Racing. For Gilliland, it was his third win in the series and a special memory.
"It's the first time racing for my dad in the truck series and it's so cool to win for him on Father's Day weekend," said Gilliland. "I have to thank Bob Jenkins, all our partners, and everyone at Front Row Motorsports for supporting me and letting me go race this past weekend. I just love racing and it was a special night for me and our family. I can't do any of it without all the support."
The night also belonged to Smith and the No. 38 Boot Barn team. Smith earned the second most points during the feature event. He raced the Boot Barn Ford F-150 to 10th at the end of Stage One, second at the end of Stage Two and ended the night in third.
The impressive run moved Smith to second in the regular season point standings. The team is now only five points behind the top spot with three races left before the playoffs begin. Smith still leads the playoff standings, but the regular season championship comes with additional bonus points.
"It was a good night for us and Boot Barn,” Smith stated. "Cool to see Todd win. I'm not a dirt track ace, but our guys brought a great truck for me. I had fun out there and we keep getting closer to the regular season championship. We want it bad."
"It's great to see Todd win and Zane run well,” McDowell said after weekend off for the NASCAR Cup Series. "I enjoyed the weekend off with my family and now we're going to concentrate on getting the most out of this regular season. We want to keep our momentum up and we really want to fight for a win. The next two months are going to be important for us. A weekend off was nice to relax, but now it's time to get back to work."
