Travis Peterson, Crew Chief No. 34 Ford Mustang

After his family relocated from Wisconsin to North Carolina due to his father taking a job at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), Travis Peterson discovered a love for motorsports through his father.

Peterson assisted his Dad at JGR, specializing in shock building for the team while pursuing his mechanical engineering degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

After college, Peterson turned to the NASCAR Xfinity Series as an engineer with JR Motorsports on the No. 9 car with driver Chase Elliott. During his time there, the team accomplished five wins, a third-place finish in the driver standings in 2013, and a Xfinity Series Championship in 2014.

In 2015, Peterson made the transition into the NASCAR Cup Series working with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 88 team at Hendrick Motorsports. During that year the No. 88 team earned three wins, 16 top-5, and 22 top-10 finishes. Peterson worked with Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the next two years before joining Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing.

While at RFK Racing, Peterson worked with drivers Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, and Chris Buescher and became the lead engineer as he prepared for his next step.

In 2023, Peterson was named the new crew chief of the No. 34 Ford Mustang and driver Michael McDowell. In his first season as a crew chief, Peterson turned heads as McDowell began to pick up top-10s and top-15s. Peterson’s name gained more recognition in the summer with seventh-place finishes at the Sonoma Raceway and the Chicago Street Course. After a gutsy call at the Atlanta Motor Speedway resulted in a fourth-place finish, everyone in the NASCAR Cup Series garage knew the name “Travis Peterson.”

Peterson made FRM history when he led McDowell and the No. 34 team to the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs after securing spot with a dominating win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. Under the direction of Peterson, McDowell finished 15th in points, a career best for the veteran driver. The team ended the season with one win, two top-5, and eight top-10 finishes.
